| American foulbrood (AFB) is considered the most significant brood disease of bees in Western Australia. The Department of Agriculture of Western Australia (DAWA) provides assistance to apiarists by way of quarantine and surveillance measures under the AFB control program. A bio-economic evaluation was considered necessary by the department for setting future policy direction. As a way forward, a number of risk analysis scenarios were simulated to estimate the future prevalence rate of AFB in the absence of the present program. This epidemiological investigation was complemented by an economic evaluation which identifies the extent of benefit that flows through to direct beneficiaries. | Reports on results of a survey, completed in 2000, of wives in three villages in the Phulbani district, Orissa, India. These villages are dominated by the Kondh scheduled tribe but some also contain members of the scheduled caste, called Dombs in Orissa. | This paper recommends a cost sharing approach for footrot management in Western Australia (WA). Appropriate public and private contributions are determined through an assessment of the benefits produced by the Department of Agriculture’s footrot management program. With rising costs a decreasing departmental budget over time, moves towards a beneficiary pays approach to footrot management have been long anticipated. Although the principles underpinning the framework for national animal disease management (put forward by the Centre of International Economics in 1998) have been agreed to by WA industry stakeholders, this paper provides an alternative approach for cost sharing based on the principles of beneficiary analysis. |

| The separation of commercial forestry from forest conservation and the subsequent end to old-growth logging in Western Australia, created fundamental problems for the Forest Products Commission, leading to a review of its functions in 2006. The FPC response to constraints on its viability contrasts with other States' approaches where carbon caps and water markets were used to place values on land uses. The effectiveness of the FPC's main policy approach to capitalise on the environmental value of forest establishment for salinity reduction is addressed in the Department of Agriculture and Food's submission to the FPC review. | In 2000, household heads of three villages located in or near forests in the south of West Bengal, India, were interviewed using a structured questionnaire1. The questionnaire is attached as an Appendix to this paper.
